OIL CHANGES;

Many people realize that they must change their oil, but do we really understand why? Let me try and explain. Lack of regular oil and filter changes could cause one or all of the following:

A) OVERHEATING
B) VALVE TRAIN FAILURE (which could start at the lifter or valve)
C) OIL STARVATION (low or restricted flow, which could lead to)
D) BEARING FAILURE
E) RING FAILURE
F) OIL LEAKS (restricted oil returns could build crank pressure)
G) DRIVEABILITY CONCERNS
H) HIGH EMISSIONS (which could cause the fuel management system to try and compensate accordingly)

WHEN WE LOOK AT THE COST OF REGULAR OIL CHANGES, I WOULD SAY THAT THERE PRETTY INEXPENSIVE COMPARED TO THE COST OF SOME OF THE REPAIRS ABOVE.

SERVICE TIPS

   Here are some tips that you might find useful

Service Engine Light: The most common item that will turn your Service Engine Soon light on is a loose gas cap. Make sure you hear three clicks when tightening.

Child Protection Locks: Most 4 door Saturn vehicles have a child protection lock by the rear door latch. Please use this to make sure your child does not open the rear door while driving.

Tire Rotation: Tires should be rotated every 10,000 kms. This service will help to extend the life of your tire tread and having your tires inspected regularly can help alert you to suspension and alignment problems.

Saturn Recommendations: Saturn recommends that you annually lubricate all weather-stripping, doors locks, hinges, and ignition cylinder.

Protecting Exterior Paint: Protect your exterior paint by washing your vehicle often. Industrial fall-out, pollution and even bird droppings can do severe damage to your exterior finish.

WHAT IS

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION INDEX, which is known by different terms by the various auto manufacturers. This is the ranking by which the manufacturers keep track of the level of customer satisfaction maintained by each dealership that sells their vehicles. This is our report card and your responses are very important to us. A Customer Service Index (C.S.I.) is maintained by each car maker for the dealerships that sell their vehicles. This information is an absolute necessity in the selection of a dealership, since it is the ranking of how an individual dealer satisfies its customers both in sales and service.

HOW IMPORTANT IS "SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE"? Repairs and Maintenance - Repair costs generally will not begin until after the expiration of your warranty, but the need for maintenance will start almost immediately so it is important to begin a regular system of maintenance as soon as possible. The maintenance schedule should be determined by the manufacturer of the vehicle. Keep records of all maintenance done to your vehicle in the event that this is a warranty dispute. If you read the fine print of any warranty, factory or otherwise, you will see that you are responsible for a regular maintenance program (the warranty will not cover an engine that seized because it had run out of lubrication after 25,000kms without an oil change). Although these disputes are relatively rare, it is much better to be prepared than sorry.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE Covers repairs not necessarily a problem at the time, but the prevention of a future problem. Your belts and hoses may still look good however manufacturers recommend replacement of rubber items every 3-4 years due to internal breakdown. Replacing a belt at proper intervals may prevent more costly repairs later. That front wheel squeal that goes away when braking, may cost you a rotor as well as a brake job if not done early enough with a simple brake reline.

WHAT IS THE BREAK-IN PERIOD FOR MY NEW SATURN AND WHAT ARE THE BREAK-IN REQUIREMENTS? Saturn doesn't have an elaborate break-in period. We recommend that during the first 1,000 kms of driving you should avoid full throttle starts (ie: pressing the accelerator all the way to the floor), cruising at any one constant speed for an extended period of time and towing a trailer. We also recommend against hard stops during the first 350 kms or so, as with every time you have new brake linings installed, to give your brake linings the opportunity to break in. This will help prevent premature wear on the brake linings.

WHAT TYPE OF ENGINE OIL SHOULD BE USED, AND HOW OFTEN DOES SATURN RECOMMEND THE OIL BE CHANGED? Saturn recommends using oil that has been certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) for gasoline engines. API certified oil can be identified by a "star burst" symbol on the front of the container. Do not use any oil that doesn't carry this symbol. SAE 5W30 viscosity oil is the best for your vehicle in most weather conditions. However, you can use SAE 10W30 if you operate your car in a majority of the time in temperatures above 20 degrees (Fahrenheit) or -7 degrees (Celsius). Do not use other viscosity oils. Refer to Owner's Manual. Saturn recommends changing the oil and filter every three months or 5,000 kms, whichever comes first, for most driving conditions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is my check engine (service engine soon light) light on?

The check engine (service engine soon light) is directly related to the emission system in your Saturn. One of the most common items that can turn this light on, is a loose gas cap. Always make sure that you hear at least 3 clicks after re-installing the cap. If you do check the cap and find that it was loose, just re-install and the light should re-set itself. If the light does not go out, contact us and we can have a look at the system.

Can I use an automatic car wash?

Yes, but Saturn suggests that before using any automatic car wash you should inquire about what type of brushes are used. Don't use automatic washes that use hard (nylon) brushes since they can cause damage (micro-scratches) to any vehicle with a "basecoat/clearcoat" paint finish. High-pressure washes may also allow water to get inside your car.

DRIVE-THRU SERVICE

Meet us in the Service drive-thru when you arrive for your appointment.  The drive-thru is sheltered from the weather and allows us to have a look at the vehicle once you arrive. The drive-thru  entrance is located on your right hand side as you pull into the parking lot. Your vehicle will then move into the service shop area.

SHUTTLE SERVICE

Our Shuttle Service has six vans running all day long.  The morning shuttle leaves at approx 8 am  (for 7:30 or 7:45 appointments).  The shuttle runs all day long with the last pick-up at 4:30 pm.

There is also an early bird shuttle leaving at 7:15 am.  Use our drop-off service, located on the west side of the building attached to the overhead door and walk on over to the Pontiac store next door.  They will take you from that location.

OVERNIGHT DROP-OFF

We relise that not everyone can visit us during regular service hours.  Our drop-off system allows you to drop-off your keys overnight at any time.  Fill out the blank envelope form, seal in the key, and drop it in the slot.
